How does a reference know to call?+
You send them a private 800 number and a unique code assigned specifically to them. They call when it’s convenient, enter the code, and connect to Avery. The message can come from you directly or through the dashboard.
Does the reference know they’re talking to an AI?+
Avery introduces herself by name and discloses that the call is recorded at the start of every call. The conversation is warm and conversational — references typically don’t know they’re talking to an AI, which means they speak naturally and candidly.
Can I use my own questions?+
Yes. We include a standard set of 8 core questions designed to surface the most important signals. You can add up to 7 custom questions on top, or replace the standard set entirely. Hard cap is 15 questions. Your dashboard shows estimated call length so you can make an informed choice.
What if a reference gives a vague answer?+
Avery probes up to twice per question with natural follow-ups. If the reference still doesn’t elaborate, Avery acknowledges it warmly and moves on. The report flags those questions so you know exactly what to read into it.
How does the check banking work?+
Unused monthly checks bank up to a cap — 20 for Starter, 60 for Growth. Slow hiring month? Those checks accumulate and are there when you need them. Banking stops if you cancel.
Is ReferenceRabbit connected to HireHotline?+
Yes. ReferenceRabbit is a standalone product with its own pricing, but it’s built on the same platform as HireHotline and delivers through the HireHotline dashboard.
